Programa de Manejo Personal de la Diabetes is based on Tomando Control de su Salud. Topics are presented in ways that are culturally appropriate. The teaching process for this program makes it highly effective. Classes are highly participatory. Mutual support and success build participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.

Format                               

  • Small group workshop
  • 2-1/2 hours per session
  • 1 session per week for 6 weeks
  • All workshops are given in Spanish without translators

Settings

  • Community settings such as churches, hospitals, senior centers and worksites

Participants

  • Spanish-speaking individuals with type 2 diabetes
  • Participants may also bring a family member or friend

Subjects

  • Techniques to deal with the symptoms of diabetes, fatigue, pain, hyper/hypoglycemia, stress and emotional problems such as depression, anger, fear and frustration
  • Appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength and endurance
  • Healthy eating
  • Appropriate use of diabetes medications
  • Working more effectively with healthcare providers
